Finnish ship operator, Finnlines, has delivered the first lengthened vessel as part of a EUR 70m energy efficiency and emissions reduction investment programme.
The RoRo MS Finntide has been lengthened by 30 metres, giving it a 30% increase in cargo carrying capacity. The additional space will significantly reduce energy consumption per transported unit compared with the original vessel.
The lengthening took place at the Remontowa S.A. shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. The vessel is now 217.77 metres long and has a capacity of 4,213 lane metres. This means that around 1km of trucks more per ship can be hosted onboard.
The Finntide is expected to return to operation on the Uusikaupunki/Turku–Travemünde route on November 26, 2017.
The energy efficiency and emissions reduction investment programme includes the lengthening of another three Breeze series RoRo vessels, with the option for a further two. The whole lengthening programme will be completed by May 2018.
“Finnlines has continued to invest in its fleet to become a more environmentally friendly and a more sustainable shipping company. We continue to optimise our operations and seek for growth in order to strengthen our competitive position. In response to growing demand, we are expanding our fleet capacity through this lengthening programme. This way we can serve our customers better and grow together with them,” says Tom Pippingsköld, CFO of Finnlines.
