Shipping company and energy supply chain provider, EXMAR, has signed a contract with Statoil ASA of Norway to provide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for two new very large gas carriers (VLGC).

The vessels will be constructed by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction at Subic Bay, Philippines, with the purpose of improving sustainability performance and reducing emissions of Statoil ASA’s operations.

The LPG fuel system will allow part of the cargo to be used for the vessels’ propulsion. LPG contains no sulphur and significantly reduces emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxides, as well as halving particulate matter compared with a fuel-only engine.

According to EXMAR, the development is the result of Statoil ASA’s commitment to sustainability and longstanding cooperation with Classification Society, Lloyds Register, and engine maker, MAN Diesel & Turbo.

EXMAR has a proven track record in LNG and LPG handling. The Statoil ASA project will be the first to valorise LPG as a marine fuel, according to EXMAR.

Delivery of the vessels is expected within the third quarter of 2020.
