Chelsea Technologies Group (CTG) wash water monitoring system for monitoring the water quality of marine scrubbers has been chosen for installation to a Shadong Pure Ocean Technology scrubber that is being retrofitted to the BAO Glory bulk carrier.
CTG’s Sea Sentry wash water system provides fully autonomous monitoring of the water inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems. It measures the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, absorbance, turbidity (to ISO 7027: 1999), temperature and pH of scrubber wash water, and can monitor open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid scrubber systems.
Monitoring of scrubber wash water is required for compliance with environmental regulations. As the 2020 global sulphur in fuel oil cap of 0.5 per cent nears, it is expected that the installation of marine scrubbers will increase to meet the standard set on emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx). Lloyd’s Register reports that an expected 1,000-1,500 scrubbers will be fitted to ships by 2020.
As well as installing such technologies, shipowners and operators must also make use of monitoring technologies to provide data to demonstrate their compliance.
Dr Brian Phillips, managing director, Chelsea Technologies Group, commented: “Scrubbers are an attractive option for many vessels assessing compliance solutions ahead of 2020, given the expected disparity in fuel costs between HFO and compliant fuels. For those taking the decision to invest in scrubbers, it is critical that they plan ahead and that all aspects of scrubber operations are considered ahead of installation.”
The retrofit was carried out at the Weihai Xinhong shipyard in Weihai, China and according to CTG, the installation represents one of the first scrubber retrofits to be carried out in a Chinese yard, a reflection of the industry-wide acceleration in the global scrubber market.
