DNV GL has launched an Approval of Manufacturer (AoM) programme that will enable additive manufacturing (AM) producers to supply products that comply with the DNV GL rules and standards.
Additive manufacturing covers three dimensional objects that are created by adding layers of materials. It includes technologies such as 3D printing, rapid prototyping (RP), direct digital manufacturing (DDM), layered manufacturing and additive fabrication.
The purpose of the AoM is to open up new opportunities for producers and users of such products, according to Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime. The programme will create new efficiencies in logistics and supply chains as well as on-board maintenance and repair.
The AoM programme will verify manufacturers’ ability to manufacture materials and products to given specifications in accordance with the DNV GL rule requirements. Manufacturers applying for AoM approval must undertake a proof of concept to demonstrate that they have feasible technology and products.
According to Ørbeck-Nilssen, the new programme will allow producers to demonstrate their fitness to the shipping industry, ensuring that safety and quality standards are upheld.
