Quadrise Fuels International has signed a joint development agreement with MSC Shipmanagement of Cyprus to trial MSAR emulsion technology on a container vessel in the MSC fleet. Trials are expected to commence in 2021 and take around three months.

The trials will look at definition, high-level scoping and feasibility activities of the MSAR, which is a low viscosity oil-in-water emulsified synthetic heavy fuel oil (HFO).

If the trial shows positive results, the companies will begin the first phase of testing the MSAR fuel in a MAN ME and Wartsila/WinGD Flex 2-stroke engine with the aim to obtain a letter of no objection approvals from the engine manufacturers.

Once this first phase has been completed, the second phase will see Quadrise and MSC roll out the MSAR fuel and potentially Quadrise’s new bioMSAR across the MSC global fleet.

“Quadrise is delighted to have signed this agreement with MSC and we look forward to working alongside them to progress this excellent opportunity. We believe that MSC’s large modern fleet installed with electronic engines and, in some cases, exhaust gas cleaning systems is well positioned to realise the economic and environmental benefits of MSAR and bioMSAR and we look forward to realising the project and getting the trials underway in 2021,” said Quadrise CEO Jason Miles.

Prabhat Jha, chief executive of MSC Shipmanagement, added: ‘We are particularly interested in the potential environmental benefits of MSAR and bioMSAR, that alongside the economic benefits, reflect our approach to operating a modern MSC fleet, and fit well with our overall future fuels strategy.’
