Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Debuts with ABB Tech

ABB has installed a 3 MW hydrogen fuel-cell system in Feadship’s new superyacht, Breakthrough, enabling silent and emission-free operation, pushing for clean energy in luxury marine travel.

ABB has taken a pioneering leap in maritime sustainability by equipping Feadship’s newly launched superyacht, Breakthrough, with a full suite of advanced technologies. It is most notably a multi-megawatt hydrogen fuel-cell system that promises quiet and emissions-free operation.

At 118.8 meters, Breakthrough is  said to be among the first vessels in the world to feature such a system. ABB supplied a 3 MW hydrogen fuel cell array, along with its Onboard DC Grid™ power system platform, two 3.2 MW Azipod® electric propulsion units, and the Power and Energy Management System (PEMS™). The package also includes ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Control for seamless joystick-to-dynamic-positioning transitions, shore power connection infrastructure, and remote diagnostic services. These tools work together to minimize onboard noise and vibrations and to optimize energy use across the vessel

The fuel cell system allows the yacht to run all its hotel amenities emission-free using hydrogen power. It can sustain silent operations at anchor for up to a week or allow cruise speeds of around 10 knots in harbors and sensitive marine areas, all without producing exhaust emissions.

“Breakthrough perfectly demonstrates how passenger comfort and environmental protection can go hand in hand on board the world’s biggest superyachts,” said Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Director and CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard. “We are grateful to ABB whose extensive technical expertise and dedicated support have been crucial in bringing this project to fruition.”

Riccardo Repetto, Global Vessel Type Responsible for Yachts at ABB Marine & Ports, said the collaboration marks “a breakthrough in the integration of marine fuel cells with propulsion systems.” He added that the yacht showcases hydrogen fuel cells as a feasible alternative to traditional power sources in shipping.

Beyond the 3 MW hydrogen setup, Breakthrough includes hybrid diesel-electric generators that can operate on biofuels and optional methanol fuel use for added flexibility, especially when hydrogen is not available. The vessel also features a host of luxurious amenities, structured around a “townhouse-at-sea” design, including multiple balconies, a pool, and an underwater viewing lounge.

This ship is set to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2025 and is widely regarded as a milestone in combining luxury with green technology.
