ClassNK is working with Evergreen Marine Corporation, Samsung Heavy Industries and Weathernews on autonomous navigation using a commercial vessel as a test platform. The project brings navigation technology, weather and ocean data and shipboard operations together, giving shipowners a practical model for how connected data can support safer autonomous operations.
ClassNK is working with Evergreen Marine Corporation, Samsung Heavy Industries and Weathernews to test autonomous navigation technologies aboard an actual commercial vessel, bringing shipboard systems and external data into a single operating environment.
The project uses Samsung Heavy Industries’ Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) system together with meteorological and oceanographic data supplied by Weathernews. Evergreen is providing the commercial vessel on which the technology will be used.
The arrangement gives the project a practical setting rather than relying solely on simulations or dedicated test craft. For shipowners, that distinction matters because autonomous navigation has to work alongside the systems, procedures and operating conditions already present on commercial vessels.
Samsung Heavy Industries developed SAS to support autonomous navigation, while Weathernews supplies the meteorological and oceanographic information needed to understand changing conditions around the vessel. ClassNK’s role brings independent assessment and maritime expertise to the project.
The combination also illustrates a wider issue for ship management. Autonomous navigation does not operate as an isolated piece of software. Its performance relies on data from the vessel and from outside sources, with the quality, timing and reliability of that information affecting the decisions made by the system.
Using a commercial vessel operated by Evergreen gives the participating companies an opportunity to examine how these technologies function within actual shipping operations.
The project provides a useful reminder that the technology investment is only one part of the equation. Reliable environmental data, vessel systems, communications and verification all have to work together if autonomous functions are to support real operational decisions.
The partnership also gives each participant a distinct role in the digital operating model: Evergreen brings the vessel and operational environment, Samsung Heavy Industries the autonomous navigation system, Weathernews the environmental data and ClassNK independent verification and maritime expertise.
That combination may prove as important as the autonomous system itself. The future of autonomous shipping will be shaped by how well these different sources of information work together onboard commercial vessels.
