MidOcean Energy will participate in LNG Canada’s Phase 2 after the project partners reached a Final Investment Decision on 29 September. The expansion will double LNG Canada’s production capacity to 28 mtpa and MidOcean’s associated LNG volumes to 1.4 mtpa.
MidOcean Energy, the LNG company formed and managed by EIG, will participate in Phase 2 of LNG Canada through its partnership with PETRONAS following the project’s Final Investment Decision.
The expansion will add two liquefaction trains at the Kitimat, British Columbia facility, taking production capacity from 14 mtpa to 28 mtpa. The project is expected to provide access to Canadian natural gas resources and Pacific shipping routes serving Asian markets.
The expansion adds further export capacity to a project designed around Pacific Basin trade. MidOcean said its participation will increase its associated LNG volumes from 0.7 mtpa to 1.4 mtpa.
The company’s participation follows its December 2025 acquisition of a 20% interest in the North Montney Upstream Joint Venture and a 20% interest in the North Montney LNG Limited Partnership, which holds PETRONAS’ 25% participating interest in LNG Canada.
The investment also gives MidOcean exposure across the LNG chain, from upstream gas production in North Montney through liquefaction and export at LNG Canada. The company said its strategy is focused on building a diversified global LNG portfolio that is competitive on both cost and carbon.
“We have long believed in LNG Canada as one of the world’s most advantaged projects: with the scale, resource depth, and Pacific Basin access to deliver reliable energy to global markets for decades,” said De la Rey Venter, CEO of MidOcean Energy.
“Participating in Phase 2 is a natural next step for us, and we have strengthened our partnership with PETRONAS while advancing our strategy of investing in high-quality, globally competitive LNG assets.”
MidOcean describes LNG as part of a lower-carbon and more secure global energy system. Its portfolio includes interests in LNG Canada, Gorgon LNG, Pluto LNG, QCLNG and Peru LNG.
The Phase 2 expansion will therefore add further LNG supply capacity while extending MidOcean’s exposure to Pacific Basin energy trade.
