CMA CGM says it has cut the carbon intensity of its fleet by 58% between 2008 and 2025, while expanding its dual-fuel fleet to 101 vessels. The container shipping group now plans 208 dual-fuel vessels by 2031, alongside greater use of AI and data to improve vessel efficiency.
The figures form part of CMA CGM’s latest decarbonisation update shared during Climate Week NYC. The company says its approach combines vessel efficiency, alternative fuels, changes to inland transport and digital tools, with a stated ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The fleet strategy is already built around alternative-fuel capability. CMA CGM says it has 20 methanol-fuelled vessels and 81 LNG-fuelled vessels within its 101-ship dual-fuel fleet. The company plans to take that total to 208 vessels by 2031.
CMA CGM is also linking vessel efficiency with its wider logistics network. Its material says 70% of intermodal transport is already handled by rail or barge, while the group plans to double its river flows by 2032. It also points to the use of wind propulsion through Neoline as part of its technology and fuel strategy.
The next phase has a stronger digital component. CMA CGM says it plans to use AI and data to further improve efficiency, placing software and operational data alongside fleet renewal and fuel procurement in its decarbonisation programme.
“At Climate Week NYC, the CMA CGM Group took part in global climate conversations and reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonizing transport and logistics,” the company said. It added: “Our ambition? Net Zero by 2050. To get there, we will keep optimizing operations through AI and data, modernizing our assets, securing fuels, and inventing tomorrow’s solutions.”
The approach shows how fleet decarbonisation is being handled across several layers, from fuel and vessel technology to voyage efficiency and inland logistics. CMA CGM’s figures also show that digital optimisation is being placed alongside physical fleet investment as part of the company’s long-term emissions strategy.
